We started back in 1999 by purchasing an acreage in Kneehill County just south of Three Hills Alberta. We longed for country living. The acreage was just overgrown land and we started out “back then” by purchasing young wethers – (because you could) – to eat the overgrown grass. From day one we were successful in raising market-weight meat animals and selling them to the Jamaican community in Calgary.
After just two years we decided to produce our own meat animals. We bought a herd of crossbred dairy goats, and we were goat farmers. Barry’s initial plan was for us to have 4 to 6 does but I, Maureen, heard 46 and Bingo we had 19 breeding does that very first year. We bought a pure-bred Boer buck, had him registered, joined the Canadian Meat Goat Association (CMGA) and the Alberta Goat Association (AGA) and our career in goats was well on its way.
We quickly identified a need for quality meat goat animals at a reasonable price to supply a growing market of knowledgeable consumers.
For the past 20 years of farming, we have focused on breeding high-quality Boer goats that have been sold all over Alberta and beyond.
In the beginning, we saw a need to share up-to-date information with all levels of government about the needs of goats, and value goats can supply. Consequently, we have worked with government and commerce to bring improvements to the meat goat industry in Alberta:
We helped to encourage mineral supplements with increased iodine for Boer meat goats.
We helped to establish realistic rates for reimbursement to goat breeders at many levels of government.
Our input encouraged goats to be included in the Agriculture Program at the University of Calgary.
We have been a watchdog over the registration of goats, pin pointing a programming error that was resulting in qualified animals not being registered.
We continue to be involved in Alberta's goat industry through Maureen's involvement on the Alberta Goat Association's board.
Our top concerns are breeding fantastic Boer meat goat animals, assisting new and existing goat breeders, and prioritizing continued customer service and knowledge sharing.
